Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid Faces Protests in Assam
BD President
1. Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid faced protests during his maiden visit to Assam on Thursday, as members of the Hindu Yuva Chatra Parishad called for Bangladesh to “take back its nationals.” The organization staged the demonstration in front of the Hotel Vivanta by Taj in the northeast Indian state, where the Bangladesh president was staying, reports the Telegraph India.
2. “Bangladesh should take back its 7,000,000 nationals who have been living in Assam illegally. It should also return Assam’s land which is in its possession. Otherwise, his visit here is meaningless,” one of the protesters was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
3. The protesters also claimed that Bangladesh was sheltering anti-India elements from China and Pakistan. Various organizations in Assam have raised demands for the detection and deportation of Bangladeshis living in the state illegally, though the lack of a repatriation agreement between India and Bangladesh serves as a barrier.
4. A total 33 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh were deported from Assam between April 1, 2016, and March 31, 2017.
